Our puppet theater!

This year, the Blue-fronted Amazon Project worked hard on raising awareness about the illegal animal trade. Under the sponsorship of the E-CONS SPVS/HSBC Project, Parque das Aves and Caiman Ecological Refuge, we started a new phase, entitled “The Blue-fronted Amazon as a promoter of the conservation at Pantanal”.

The E-CONS SPVS/HSBC Project aims to support people that really “make the difference” on activities related to nature conservation. The researcher Gláucia Seixas was one of the people selected for the first edition of the program, representing the Pantanal Biome. The main goal is to construct a large net for the defense of Pantanal biodiversity and to prevent the illegal animal trade.

To raise awareness of kids and teenagers, our puppet theater was created! The great story, the wonderful puppets and all the training was done by the actress and art educator Ramona Rodrigues, from the Cia das Artes, Campo Grande-MS. She did a fantastic job! Thank you Ramona!!

Anne Zugman, biologist and environmental educator of the Neotropical Foundation of Brazil, does the manipulation of the puppets, presents the play and is responsible for all the complementary activities. Anne is really great with the kids!!

The play, entitled “On the wings of the wind”, tells the story of a parrot family group threatened by animal dealers that want to collect their nestlings to sell them at the city. In a pleasant and playful manner, the story deals with the illegal animal trade in Mato Grosso do Sul, and brings up the importance of the preservation of the Pantanal.

Since may 2013, Anne and the puppets  “flew” to many schools and environmental events in Pantanal, “landing” in Porto Murtinho, Jardim, Nioaque, Campo Grande, Bonito, Bodoquena, Miranda and Corumbá. Over 3000 kids, from urban, rural and river communities have seen the plays, amazed with the talking parrot puppets! Most of these kids have never seen this type of activity before, as few cultural activities reach distant communities in Pantanal.

The puppet theater is a very efficient tool for the environmental education, and through this tool we want to raise society awareness about the illegal animal trade, aiming to influence public policy regarding wildlife management in Pantanal.

Thank you Anne for your hard work!
